Betelgeuse is a famous red supergiant star.

It lives in the constellation Orion. This star is the tenth-brightest star in our night sky.

It is also the second brightest star in its own constellation. Betelgeuse is a variable star. This means its brightness changes over time. It has a main cycle near 400 days. This star is very bright in near-infrared light. It is a huge part of the sky.

This star is much larger than our Sun. Its radius is between 640 and 764 times the Sun.

Star-sizes

If it were in our Solar System, it would be huge. It would swallow the orbits of Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. Its surface would reach the asteroid belt. The star is also very heavy. Its mass is between 10 and 20 times the Sun.

It moves through space at 30 kilometers per second. This movement creates a bow shock that is four light-years wide.

People have watched this star for a long time.

Ancient astronomers noted its red color. In 1603, Johann Bayer gave it the name Alpha Orionis.

In 1836, Sir John Herschel wrote about its brightness changes. He saw it outshine the star Rigel in 1837. In 1920, scientists measured its size for the first time.

They used a special tool at Mount Wilson Observatory. This was a very big step for science.

Betelgeuse has many interesting details.

It is about 400 to 600 light-years away from us. The star is less than 10 million years old. It is expected to end in a supernova.

This explosion might happen within 100,000 years. When it happens, it will shine like a half-Moon. This will last for more than three months. Life on Earth will be safe from the blast. Some think it might have a companion star named Siwarha.

The Hubble Space Telescope has taken ultraviolet pictures of it. These pictures show bright hot spots on the surface.

In 2019, the star began to dim quite a bit. Scientists used the Hubble telescope to study this event. They found that dust caused the dimming. This dust came from a mass ejection.

This is like a giant puff of gas leaving the star. Studying these puffs helps us learn how stars die.
