Kepler-22b

space Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Kepler-22b is a very special world far away in space. It is an exoplanet, which is a planet that orbits a star other than our Sun. This planet sits in the habitable zone of its star. The habitable zone is a space where it is not too hot and not too cold. Because of this, liquid water could exist on the planet's surface.

Finding a planet like this is a big deal for scientists. It helps us learn how many worlds might support life.

This world works in a way that is different from Earth. Scientists found it by watching a transit. A transit happens when a planet passes in front of its star. When this happens, the star looks a little bit dimmer for a short time.

Kepler-22b takes about 289 days to orbit its star once. This is the length of its orbital period. Its orbit is tilted at an angle of about 90 degrees. This specific angle is called its inclination.

We first learned about this world thanks to NASA's Kepler Space Telescope. The telescope saw the first transit on 12 May 2009. This was only the third day of the telescope's work. Later, the Spitzer Space Telescope helped confirm what was happening. Scientists finally announced that Kepler-22b really existed on 5 December 2011.

This was the first time a transiting planet was found in the habitable zone of a Sun-like star.

There are many interesting facts about the planet and its star. The star, Kepler-22, is a G-type star. It is 3% less massive than our Sun. It is also 2% smaller in volume. The planet itself has a radius about twice as large as Earth.

We do not know its exact mass yet. However, we know it is likely not made of rock like Earth. It might be a "water world" with a huge ocean. It could even have a shell made of gas or liquid.

Thinking about Kepler-22b can help us imagine other places in the universe. It is located in the constellation Cygnus. Even though the star is bright to a telescope, it is too dim to see with your eyes.

If the planet has an atmosphere, it might have a moderate temperature. Some scientists, like Natalie Batalha, wonder if life could live in its oceans. This makes the planet a top candidate for research into alien life. It reminds us that our own Earth is part of a much bigger neighborhood.
