Kepler-186f is a very special world located far away in the Cygnus constellation.

It is an exoplanet, which means it is a planet outside our own solar system. This world is important because it sits in the habitable zone of its star. The habitable zone is the area where it is not too hot or too cold. In this spot, liquid water might be able to stay on the surface. This makes it a very promising place to look for life. Scientists call it a candidate because we are still learning about it.

Finding this planet required a lot of careful work by NASA. Scientists used the Kepler space telescope to watch a distant star. They used a way of finding planets called the transit method. This works when a planet passes in front of its star. When this happens, the star looks a little bit dimmer for a short time. This dimming is like a tiny shadow passing by. By looking at this signal for three years, they found Kepler-186f.

This discovery was shared with the world in early 2014. Researchers first presented their findings at a conference on March 19, 2014. Later, they officially announced the planet on April 17, 2014. They also published a scientific paper about it in a journal called Science. It was the first time we found an Earth-sized planet in a habitable zone. This was a huge step for space science. It proved that worlds like ours might be common in the universe.

Kepler-186f has many interesting numbers and facts. It is about 1.17 times the size of Earth. This means it is roughly 11% larger in radius than our home. The planet orbits a red dwarf star named Kepler-186. This star is much smaller and cooler than our Sun. It takes about 130 days for the planet to orbit its star once. The star itself is about 4 billion years old.

Even though we know its size, much is still a mystery. We do not know if it has an atmosphere or what it is made of. It could be a rocky world or even an ocean planet. The planet might have a very slow rotation. This could mean a single day lasts for weeks or months. We cannot use our best telescopes to see its air yet because it is too far. However, this discovery helps us know what to look for next. We are learning more about our place in the stars every day.
