It is an exoplanet, which is a planet outside our solar system. This world is about 1.17 times the size of Earth. It orbits a small, red star named Kepler-186. This star is a red dwarf. Red dwarfs are smaller and cooler than our Sun.

Kepler-186f sits in the habitable zone. This is the area around a star where it is not too hot or too cold. In this spot, liquid water might exist on the surface. We do not know if the planet has water or air yet. We also do not know what it is made of. It could be a rocky world like Earth. It could even be a planet made of ocean.

NASA found the planet using the transit method. This is a way to find planets by watching for a dimming star. A planet looks like a tiny shadow when it passes in front of its star. It takes about 130 days for Kepler-186f to orbit its star once. This discovery shows that Earth-sized worlds exist in far away star systems.
