Epsilon Eridani is a bright star located in the southern constellation of Eridanus.

It is very special because it is one of the closest individual stars we can see with our naked eyes. This star is about ten light-years away from our Sun.

Because it is so close, it is a very important target for scientists. They study it to learn more about how stars work. People even use it in science fiction stories about traveling through space.

This star is much younger than our Sun. It is estimated to be about one billion years old. This youth makes the star very active and energetic.

It has a stellar wind that is 30 times as strong as the Sun's wind. The star is also smaller and has less mass than our Sun. It has an orange color because of its temperature. This star belongs to a group called spectral class K2. It also rotates very quickly, completing one turn every 11.2 days.

Astronomers have known about this star for a very long time. The Greek astronomer Claudius Ptolemy included it in a list of stars in the 2nd century AD.

Later, many other scientists added it to their own star catalogues. In 1603, Johann Bayer gave it the name Epsilon Eridani. This name uses a Greek letter to group it with other stars. In 1881, William L. Elkin used a special tool to help find its distance. He used a method called parallax to see how the star moves. This helped prove the star was quite close to us.

There are many interesting things orbiting this star. Scientists found a giant planet named AEgir orbiting it.

This planet was discovered because it caused changes in the star's movement. In 2015, the International Astronomical Union gave the planet and star official names. The names came from students at Mountainside Middle School in Washington.

The star is named Ran and the planet is named AEgir. These names come from Norse mythology about the sea. The students won a special competition to choose these names.

The star also has a large debris disc made of dust.

This disc has a ring of dust located about 70 au from the star. There is also warm dust closer in, between 3 au and 20 au. A gap exists in the dust between 20 and 70 au. This gap suggests that other planets might live in that space. Studying these rings helps us understand how solar systems form. It is like looking at a map of a new world. We can learn how planets find their places around a star.
