This star is in a special stage of its life. It is an aging star that is about 7.1 billion years old. It has used up the hydrogen in its core. Because of this, it has evolved off the main sequence. This means it has changed into a red giant.

It is about the same mass as our Sun. However, it has expanded to 25 times the Sun's size. It is also about 170 times as luminous, which means it gives off much more light.

People have studied Arcturus for a very long time. Ancient people mentioned its red color in their writings. In 1391, Geoffrey Chaucer called the star Alramih. A famous astronomer named Johann Bayer gave it a new name in 1603. That name was Alpha Boötis.

In 1635, Jean-Baptiste Morin did something amazing. He used a telescope to see Arcturus during the daytime. This was the first time anyone recorded seeing a star in full daylight.

Arcturus is located 36.7 light-years away from our Sun. It is the second-closest giant star to Earth. The star is moving very fast through space. It is also part of a group called the Arcturus stream. This group includes 52 other stars.

The star is about 110 times brighter than the Sun in visible light. Its total power output is about 180 times that of the Sun. Scientists use satellites like Hipparcos to measure its distance and movement.

Finding Arcturus is like following a path in the sky. You can find it by following the handle of the Big Dipper. There is a famous saying to help you. It says to arc to Arcturus, then spike to Spica. This helps you find your way through the stars. The name Arcturus means "Guardian of the Bear."
