It is the brightest star in the constellation of Carina. In the whole night sky, it is the second-brightest star. Only the star Sirius is brighter than Canopus. Because it is so bright, it is easy to see with your eyes. It looks like a brilliant white light in the darkness.

This star is very important to people on Earth and in space.

This star is much larger and more powerful than our Sun. It is a bright giant with a white color. Canopus is nine to ten times as massive as the Sun. It has expanded to be 71 times wider than our Sun. The light it gives off is over 10,000 times more powerful than the Sun.

Right now, the star is in a stage called a blue loop. This happens because it is burning helium in its core. It has already passed through a stage called the red-giant branch. This happened after it used up the hydrogen in its center.

Many different cultures have given this star special names throughout history. In ancient India, people named it after a wise sage called Agastya. Chinese astronomers called it the Old Man of the South Pole. In Islamic astronomy, it is known as Suhail.

The name Canopus likely comes from a Greek legend. It was the name of a pilot for King Menelaus. Some people think the name also relates to an ancient Egyptian port. This port was named Canopus and sat near the Nile.

Scientists have studied this star for a very long time. In 1603, a map maker named Johann Bayer called it Alpha Argus. Later, in 1763, an astronomer named Nicolas Louis de Lacaille changed its name. He divided the huge constellation into smaller parts. This made the star Alpha Carinae.

In 1966, a satellite named Gemini XI studied the star's light. Astronomers also use the Henry Draper Catalogue to find it as HD 45348. It is a very well-known star for researchers.

Canopus is very helpful for finding your way. Long ago, travelers used it to navigate across the sea. It can help people find the south celestial pole.

Even modern spacecraft use this star to stay on track. Some ships carry a special tool called a Canopus star tracker. This camera helps the ship know which way it is facing. In 1964, the Mariner 4 spacecraft used the star to help it stay stable. It was the first time a star was used this way.
