Many people in history used Canopus to find their way. Travelers used it to help them sail across the sea. In space, scientists use it too. Some spacecraft use a special camera to track Canopus. This helps the ship know which way it is facing.

Different cultures had many names for this star. In China, people called it the Old Man of the South Pole. In ancient India, it was named after a wise man. The name Canopus might come from a Greek pilot.
