Scientists once thought they found a new world far away. This place is called Gliese 581d. It is located in the Libra constellation.

The planet is about 20.4 light-years from Earth. It orbits a star named Gliese 581. This world might be a super-Earth. That means it is much bigger than our own planet. It has a minimum mass of 6.98 Earth masses.

It was a very exciting discovery for many people.

Finding this planet used a special way of looking. Astronomers used the radial velocity technique. This method looks at how a planet pulls on its star. Gravity from a planet causes small wobbles in the star. A team led by Stéphane Udry used a large telescope in Chile. They used the HARPS instrument to find these signals.

In 2007, they first spotted the signal. They thought the planet took 83 days to orbit. Later, in 2009, they found it orbits in 66.8 days. This change meant the planet was in the habitable zone.

There is a big debate about this planet. Some scientists say Gliese 581d does not actually exist. They believe the signal comes from stellar activity. This is just the star acting up or moving.

A 2014 study called the planet an artifact. This means it was a false detection. Other studies in 2015 and 2016 agreed with this. However, a 2024 research note says it might still be real. It suggests a new measurement of the star's rotation. We still need more research to be sure.

If the planet is real, it might be very special. It sits at the outer edge of the habitable zone. This is the area where liquid water could stay on the surface.

The planet gets 30% of the light Earth gets from the Sun. It might be too cold without a thick atmosphere. A greenhouse effect could keep it warm. This effect traps heat to help the planet stay cozy. It could even have a large and deep ocean.

Many people on Earth have thought about this distant world. In 2009, a project called "Hello from Earth" began. People from 195 countries sent short messages.

They sent 25,880 messages in total. A large radio telescope in Australia sent them into space. This planet has even appeared in shows like Doctor Who. It shows how much we wonder about the stars. We are always looking for new neighbors in the dark.
