Proxima Centauri b

space Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Proxima Centauri b is a significant exoplanet located in the constellation Centaurus. An exoplanet is a planet that orbits a star outside our own Solar System.

This world is notable because it is the closest known exoplanet to Earth. It orbits the star Proxima Centauri, which is a red dwarf. Proxima Centauri is the nearest star to our Sun, located about 4.2 light-years away. This planet sits within the habitable zone of its host star. The habitable zone is the orbital region where temperatures might allow liquid water to exist on a surface.

Scientists discovered this planet using a technique called Doppler spectroscopy. This method measures the tiny wobbles in a star's motion. As a planet orbits, its gravity pulls on the parent star. This causes the star to move slightly toward and away from Earth.

In January 2016, astronomers launched the Pale Red Dot project to investigate these anomalies. A team led by Anglada-Escudé eventually confirmed the discovery on August 24, 2016. Before this, studies in 2008 and 2009 had ruled out larger planets in that same zone. This discovery was a major milestone in the field of planetology.

The orbital mechanics of Proxima b are very different from Earth's. The planet completes one full orbit in approximately 11.2 Earth days. It orbits its star at a distance of about 0.0485 AU. This distance is over 20 times closer to its star than Earth is to the Sun.

Because it is so close, the planet is likely tidally locked. Tidal locking occurs when a planet's rotation matches its orbital period. This would mean one side always faces the star while the other remains in darkness. Such a state could create extreme climate differences between the two hemispheres. However, higher orbital eccentricity might allow for different rotation patterns.

We do not yet know the exact physical makeup of Proxima b. It is likely a terrestrial planet, meaning it has a rocky composition. Its minimum mass is estimated at 1.07 Earth masses. If the orbital inclination is 47 degrees, the true mass could be 1.26 Earth masses.

The radius is also uncertain, with estimates ranging from 0.94 to 1.4 Earth radii. Depending on its history, the planet could be a large, water-rich world. Alternatively, it could be a dense, Mercury-like planet with a massive core. Scientists study the chemical ratios of the host star to help guess these details.

The host star, Proxima Centauri, presents a challenging environment. It is a red dwarf with only 12.2% of the Sun's mass. It is also a flare star, which means it emits intense radiation. These flares can vary in luminosity by a factor of 100 within hours. Such intense electromagnetic radiation could potentially strip an atmosphere away from a planet.

Despite this, the planet receives about 70% of the infrared energy that Earth receives. This energy balance is a key factor in determining if the planet is truly habitable.

Climate models offer several fascinating possibilities for the surface of Proxima b. If it has an atmosphere, it might contain oxygen or carbon dioxide. The surface could be covered in ice or have small, scattered oceans. Some models suggest "eyeball" or "lobster-shaped" areas of liquid water. These would be regions near the equator where liquid can persist.

Other scenarios include a subsurface ocean hidden beneath a thin layer of ice. The presence of clouds and hazes would also heavily influence the local weather.

Proxima Centauri b is part of the complex Alpha Centauri triple star system. This system includes the binary pair Alpha Centauri A and Alpha Centauri B. The movement of these stars might have influenced the planet's orbital history. Studying this system helps astronomers understand how planets form around red dwarfs. Red dwarfs are the most common type of star in our galaxy. Since 20-40% of red dwarfs have planets in their habitable zones, Proxima b is a vital case study. Its proximity makes it a primary target for future robotic space exploration.
