Kepler-452b

space Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Kepler-452b is an exoplanet located in the constellation Cygnus. An exoplanet is a planet that orbits a star other than our Sun. This world is often called "Earth 2.0" or "Earth's Cousin." It is a super-Earth because it is significantly larger than our home planet.

It orbits within the habitable zone of its host star. The habitable zone is the region around a star where temperatures might allow liquid water to exist. Kepler-452b is the first potentially rocky super-Earth discovered in such a zone around a Sun-like star.

The planet orbits a star named Kepler-452. This star is a G-type star, which is the same classification as our Sun. Kepler-452 is about 3.7% more massive and 11% larger than the Sun. It also has a surface temperature of 5757 K. This is very close to the Sun's surface temperature of 5778 K. The star is roughly 6 billion years old. This makes it about 1.5 billion years older than our Sun. Because the star is older, it is about 20% more luminous, or bright, than the Sun.

Kepler-452b has several unique physical characteristics. Its radius is approximately 1.63 times that of Earth. This makes the planet about 63% larger in size than our world. Its mass is estimated to be at least three times Earth's mass. Some calculations suggest a probable mass of five times Earth's mass. If it is a terrestrial planet, it would have high density. This would likely result in many active volcanoes. The surface gravity would be nearly twice as strong as Earth's gravity.

The orbit of Kepler-452b is very similar to Earth's orbit. It has an orbital radius of about 1.04 AU. An AU, or astronomical unit, is the distance from Earth to the Sun. The planet completes one full orbit in roughly 385 days. It likely has a circular orbit and is not tidally locked. A tidally locked planet always shows the same face to its star. Because it is in the inner edge of the habitable zone, it receives 10% more energy than Earth. This extra energy could trigger a runaway greenhouse effect. This is a process where a planet becomes too warm to sustain life.

Scientists discovered this planet using the Kepler space telescope. The telescope uses a photometer to detect transit events. A transit occurs when a planet passes in front of its star. This causes the star to dim for a short, regular amount of time. Kepler observed these light curves between May 2009 and March 2012. NASA announced the discovery of Kepler-452b on 23 July 2015. While one 2018 study suggested it remains a candidate, the probability of a false positive is less than 1%. This suggests the planet's existence is very likely.

There is still much we do not know about this distant world. We do not know if it is entirely habitable or if it is a rocky planet. Some scientists wonder if it has a voluminous gaseous envelope like Neptune. This would make it a gas-rich planet rather than a rocky one. If it is rocky, it might hold onto oceans for a long time. This could happen because its mass might buffer the carbonate-silicate cycle. This cycle could extend the planet's lifetime for another 500 to 900 million years. Thick, misty clouds might cover much of the surface.

Kepler-452b is incredibly far from our Solar System. At the speed of the New Horizons spacecraft, the trip would take millions of years. It would take approximately 26 to 30 million years to reach it. Because of this distance, current telescopes cannot determine its true mass or atmosphere. Future missions like TESS and CHEOPS will study nearby stars. The James Webb Space Telescope may eventually help analyze atmospheres of such worlds. Even the SETI Institute is searching for radio transmissions from this system. So far, they have scanned billions of channels without finding any signals.
