Its name means "the Altar" in Latin. In Greek myths, this constellation was the altar where gods made offerings. They used it to form an alliance before they defeated the Titans. This constellation is part of the 88 modern groups of stars.

It sits near the Milky Way, which is a bright path of stars. This makes the area very rich with stars and gas clouds.

Many bright stars live within the borders of Ara. The brightest star is Beta Arae, which is an orange supergiant.

This star is about 650 light-years away from Earth. It is over 8 times as massive as our Sun. Another bright star is Alpha Arae, which is blue-white. This star is about 270 light-years away. It is surrounded by a thick disk of material. It also loses mass through a strong stellar wind.

History shows that people have looked at Ara for a long time. The astronomer Ptolemy described it in the 2nd century. He listed it as one of his 48 classical constellations. In 270 BC, a man named Aratus recorded it near the horizon. Later, artists drew the altar in different ways. A woodcut from 1482 showed the altar with demons. In 1603, Johann Bayer drew it with burning incense. This incense might look like the smoke from a Mabkhara.

Ara contains many amazing deep-sky objects. One special place is Westerlund 1. This is a super star cluster. It holds the star Westerlund 1-26. This star is one of the largest stars we know.

There is also a very close group called NGC 6397. It is a globular cluster about 10,500 light-years away. You can see it with binoculars if the sky is dark. Another object is the Stingray Nebula. It is the youngest known planetary nebula. It formed around the year 1987.

We can also find planets in the Ara star systems. Scientists have found planets in seven different systems there. The star Mu Arae is like our Sun. It has four known planets orbiting it. Another system is Gliese 676. This is a binary system, which means it has two stars. These two red dwarf stars have four planets too. Looking at Ara helps us learn about how stars and planets work together.
