Triangulum is a small constellation in the northern sky. Its name comes from the Latin word for "triangle."

This shape comes from three very bright stars. These stars form a long and narrow triangle in space. This group of stars has been known for a very long time. Ancient Babylonians and Greeks both recognized it. The astronomer Ptolemy listed it as one of 48 constellations in the 2nd century. It is a small part of the sky. It covers only 132 square degrees. This is about 0.320% of the whole night sky.

Three main stars create the famous triangle shape. The first is Beta Trianguli, a white giant star. It is 127 light-years away from Earth. This star is actually a binary system. This means two stars orbit a common center of gravity. They orbit each other every 31 days. The second star is Alpha Trianguli. It is a yellow-white star at the top point of the triangle. The third star is Gamma Trianguli. It is a white star about 112 light-years away. It is 33 times more luminous than our Sun.

Many people have studied these stars through history. In ancient times, Babylonians called it "The Plough." It appeared in the pre-dawn sky in February. This told people in Mesopotamia it was time to start spring ploughing. The Greeks called it Deltoton because it looked like a Greek letter. Roman writers later changed the name. In China, stars in this area were called "Heaven's great general." In the 1600s, Johann Bayer gave names to several stars. Later, John Flamsteed added more names to his catalogs.

There are many deep-sky objects in this area. The most famous is the Triangulum Galaxy, or Messier 33.

It is a spiral galaxy 2.3 million light-years away. It is smaller than our Milky Way galaxy. You can even see it with your naked eyes on dark nights. There is also a very distant object called 3C 48. It was the first quasar ever observed. Quasars are very bright and far away. This constellation also holds several other galaxies. Some of these belong to the NGC 672 group.

Triangulum connects to many things we know about space. It sits near other famous constellations like Andromeda and Perseus. We can find planets orbiting stars in this constellation too. For example, the star HD 9446 has two planets. These planets are much larger than Jupiter. Another star, HD 13189, has a very large planetary companion. This is one of the largest stars found with a planet. Looking at Triangulum helps us see how stars and galaxies work together. It is a busy place in our universe.
