Lupus is a constellation in the mid-Southern Sky.

Constellation Lupus
Constellation Lupus

Its name is the Latin word for wolf. This group of stars covers 333.7 square degrees of space. That means it fills about 0.809% of our night sky. It is the 46th largest of the 88 modern constellations. You can see it if you are south of latitude 34°N.

Finding Lupus is easier if you look for its neighbors. It is bordered by five main constellations. These are Scorpius, Norma, Circinus, Libra, and Centaurus. It also touches the corner of the constellation Hydra.

The official shape of Lupus is a twelve-sided polygon. Scientists use specific math to mark its borders. These borders sit between -29.83° and -55.58° in declination. The International Astronomical Union gave it the short name Lup in 1922.

Many people have seen this group of stars differently over time. In ancient times, it was part of Centaurus. Some saw it as a wineskin held by Centaurus. A man named Hipparchus named it a beast in the 2nd century BC.

In Babylon, it was a hybrid creature called the Mad Dog. This creature had a man's head and a lion's body. Arab astronomers called the stars the branches of a date palm. Later, Islamic astronomers drew it as either a lion or a wolf.

Lupus contains many interesting stars and objects. There are 127 stars in this area brighter than magnitude 6.5. The brightest star is Alpha Lupi. It is a blue giant star located 460 light-years away.

This star is a Beta Cephei variable. This means it pulses in brightness every 7 hours and 6 minutes. In the year 1006, a huge star explosion called a supernova happened here. This event was one of the brightest in recorded history.

Space travelers can find many wonders in this constellation. You might see the Retina Nebula, also known as IC 4406. This is a cylindrical nebula 5,000 light-years away. It contains some of the hottest stars in existence.

There are also globular clusters like NGC 5824. You can even find spiral galaxies in this part of the sky. One galaxy, ESO 274-1, looks like it is seen from the edge. It is a beautiful sight for those with a telescope.
