People have looked at these stars for a very long time. An astronomer named Ptolemy listed Lepus in the 2nd century. He was one of the first to name these stars. Today, Lepus is still one of the 88 modern constellations. Some people also link the hare to the Moon rabbit. Four stars in the group form a shape called a quadrilateral. In Arabic, these stars have names like the Throne of Jawzā'.

Some stars in Lepus change their brightness over time. These are called variable stars. One star is R Leporis, also called Hind's Crimson Star. It is a red star that changes over 420 days. It is located 1,500 light-years away from us. Another star, RX Leporis, is a red giant. This star changes its brightness every two months.

There is also a special object called M79 in this area. It is a globular cluster, which is a big group of stars. Pierre Méchain discovered it in the year 1780. This cluster is 42,000 light-years away from Earth. It has an intermediate concentration of stars toward its center. Many people say it looks like a starfish.
