Lupus is a constellation located in the mid-Southern Sky. Its name comes from the Latin word for wolf. This group of stars covers 333.7 square degrees of the celestial sphere. This area represents about 0.809% of the entire night sky. Among the 88 modern constellations, Lupus ranks as the 46th largest.

Observers located south of latitude 34°N can view this constellation. The International Astronomical Union officially adopted the three-letter abbreviation Lup in 1922.

The boundaries of Lupus are defined by a twelve-sided polygon. Scientists use an equatorial coordinate system to map these specific borders. The declination coordinates for the constellation lie between −29.83° and −55.58°. Lupus is surrounded by several other celestial groupings. It is bordered by Scorpius, Norma, Circinus, Libra, and Centaurus. It also touches the corner of the constellation Hydra.

Throughout history, different cultures have seen different shapes in these stars. In ancient times, many viewed Lupus as an asterism within the constellation Centaurus. Some saw it as an animal being killed for the centaur. The Greek scholar Eratosthenes suggested it might be a wineskin held by Centaurus. It was not officially separated from Centaurus until Hipparchus of Bithynia named it in the 2nd century BC. Hipparchus used a name meaning "beast."

The origins of the constellation may trace back to Babylonian star-lore. The Babylonians recognized a figure known as the Mad Dog, or UR.IDIM. This was a hybrid creature with the head and torso of a man. It also possessed the legs and tail of a lion. In Arab folk astronomy, Lupus and Centaurus were called the dense branches of the date palm. Later, Islamic Medieval astronomers used the term Al-Sab' to describe a predatory wild beast. Depending on the manuscript, they drew it as either a lion or a wolf.

Lupus contains many bright and scientifically significant stars. There are 127 stars within its borders that have an apparent magnitude of 6.5 or brighter. The brightest star is Alpha Lupi, which has the proper name Uridim. This name was assigned on September 12, 2024, based on the Babylonian UR.IDIM. Alpha Lupi is an ageing blue giant star of spectral type B1.5 III. It is located approximately 460 light-years from Earth.

This star is also a Beta Cephei variable. This means it pulsates in brightness by 0.03 of a magnitude every 7 hours and 6 minutes.

Deep-sky objects provide much more to explore within this region. The constellation hosts several globular clusters, including NGC 5824 and NGC 5986. To the south, you can find the open clusters NGC 5822 and NGC 5749. The western border contains the Wolf–Rayet planetary nebula known as IC 4406. This is also called the Retina Nebula. It is a cylindrical nebula located 5,000 light-years away.

It contains some of the hottest stars in existence and features dust lanes in its center. Another planetary nebula, NGC 5882, sits toward the center of the constellation.

Lupus has also been the site of incredible cosmic events. In the year 1006, a massive supernova known as SN 1006 occurred here. This explosion was recorded between April 30 and May 1, 1006. It is described as the brightest stellar event in recorded history.

Beyond stars and nebulae, the constellation also contains distant galaxies. The spiral galaxy ESO 274-1 can be seen edge-on. It requires an amateur telescope with at least 12 inches of aperture to view. This galaxy is 9 arcminutes by 0.7 arcminutes and has a small, elliptical nucleus. Finally, the transiting exoplanet Lupus-TR-3b is also located within this constellation.
