It is the 20th brightest star we can see. You can find it in the southern constellation called Crux. It is also part of a famous shape called the Southern Cross. This shape is very important to many people. You can see it on the flags of Australia and New Zealand. It is also on the flags of Samoa and Papua New Guinea.

Even the flag of Brazil uses it to show the state of Rio de Janeiro.

This star is actually a triple star system. This means it is made of three different stars. One main star is a blue giant called Beta Crucis A. This star is very huge and very hot. It is about 15 times as heavy as our Sun. It is also between 7.3 and 8.9 times wider than our Sun. This star is a variable star, which means its light changes. It has three different ways of pulsing or shaking. These pulses happen every 4.03 to 4.59 hours.

A second star called Beta Crucis B orbits the main one. This star is much smaller than the blue giant. It has a mass that is only 1.9 times our Sun. There is also a third companion called Beta Crucis D. This star is very young and is likely in a stage called post-T Tauri. Scientists found this third star using the Chandra X-ray Observatory. A 2023 study confirmed that all these stars are bound together. They move through space as one group.

Astronomers have studied Mimosa for a long time. In 1957, a German astronomer named Wulff-Dieter Heintz made a discovery. He found that the main stars are a spectroscopic binary. This means they are too close to see separately with a telescope. They orbit each other every 5 years. In 2016, a group called the WGSN helped standardize star names. They officially approved the name Mimosa in July of that year. This helps everyone around the world use the same names.

Mimosa is a very busy and changing place. The blue giant is losing mass through a strong stellar wind. This wind moves at a speed of 2,000 kilometers per second. The star is between 8 and 11 million years old. Because it used up its hydrogen fuel, it might change again. In about 6 million years, it might explode as a supernova. This would be a huge and bright event in space. It is a star that shows us how living things and suns change over time.
