Mimosa is a large group of plants. It includes about 600 different species. These plants can be small herbs or larger shrubs. They belong to the legume family. You can find them in many parts of the world. They grow in the Americas from North Dakota to Argentina. They also grow in parts of Africa. You can find them in India and Indochina too.

Some Mimosa plants move in very special ways. The most famous one is Mimosa pudica. People often call it the touch-me-not. This plant reacts when you touch its leaves. It can also fold its leaves when it feels heat. This is a very fast movement. Other mimosas move based on the time of day. They raise their leaves during the day. Then they lower them when it is night.

Scientists have studied these plants for a long time. A man named Jean-Jacques d'Ortous de Mairan studied them in 1729. He did experiments with mimosas. His work gave us the first evidence of biological clocks. A biological clock is a way a living thing tracks time. The name Mimosa also has a deep history. It comes from a Greek word meaning actor or mime. This is because the leaves seem to mimic conscious life.

There are many important facts about how these plants look. A Mimosa flower might look like one single round ball. It is actually a cluster of many tiny flowers. You can tell a Mimosa apart from other plants easily. For example, it has ten or fewer stamens. Stamens are the parts of a flower that make pollen. Another species is Mimosa tenuiflora. Its root bark contains a drug called dimethyltryptamine. This is used in shamanic ayahuasca brews.

Mimosa plants are quite different from their close relatives. You might see plants like the Persian silk tree. These look similar because they have similar leaves. However, they belong to different groups called genera. Mimosa is also one of the few plants that moves quickly. Other plants like this include the Venus flytrap. Some mimosas have even become weeds in places like Hawaii. This happens when they are grown outdoors in the tropics.
