life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Mimosa is a group of about 600 plants. These plants are herbs and shrubs. They grow in many places. You can find them in the Americas. They also grow in Africa and Asia.

Mimosa diplotricha,
Mimosa diplotricha,

The name Mimosa comes from a Greek word. That word means "actor" or "mime." This is because the leaves seem to act like living things. One kind is called Mimosa pudica. People call it the touch-me-not. This plant moves very fast. The leaves fold up when you touch them. They also fold when they feel heat.

Some mimosas also have a biological clock. This is a way the plant knows the time. These plants raise their leaves during the day. Then they lower them at night.

Mimosas have small flowers. They look like one round ball. But they are actually many tiny flowers in a cluster. You can tell them apart from other plants by their flowers. Mimosas have ten or fewer stamens. Stamens are the parts of a flower that make pollen.
