Wisteria vines climb by twining their stems. They wrap around things like trees or walls. You can tell some species apart by how they twist. Japanese wisteria twists clockwise. Chinese wisteria twists counterclockwise. Some plants can grow very large. One huge plant in California weighs 250 tons!

Most wisteria grow in Asia or North America. In the United States, some types are invasive. This means they grow so fast they can choke out other plants. They need strong support to climb. Their thick stems can crush wooden posts or damage houses.

Be very careful with this plant. The seeds contain a toxin called wisterin. This is a poison that can make people or pets sick. It can cause stomach pains or vomiting.
