He lived during the early Italian Renaissance. This was a time of great new ideas in Europe. Ficino was a very important humanist philosopher. He was also an astrologer and a translator. He helped lead a group called the Florentine Academy. This group was meant to be like the famous Academy from ancient times. His work changed how people thought about philosophy in Europe.

Ficino spent much of his life translating old books. He was the first person to translate all the works of Plato into Latin. This was a huge job that took many years. He also translated a collection of Greek documents called the Hermetica. He even worked on the writings of Neoplatonists like Plotinus and Porphyry. These books helped people in his time learn about ancient ideas. By turning Greek words into Latin, he made them easier for many people to read. This helped spread new ways of thinking across the whole continent.

Ficino's life was tied to a very powerful family. His father, Diotifeci, was a doctor for Cosimo de' Medici. Because of this, Cosimo took Marsilio into his own home. Cosimo became a lifelong supporter of Ficino's work. Ficino even became a teacher for Cosimo's grandson, Lorenzo de' Medici. He also taught other famous thinkers like Giovanni Pico della Mirandola. These connections helped him lead the Platonic Academy in Florence.

Ficino had many different interests in his studies. He wrote a famous book called *The Book of Life* in 1489. This book gave advice on health and how to stay strong. He also wrote about the plague and how to treat it. Because he studied the stars, he sometimes got into trouble. In 1489, the Catholic Church accused him of heresy. This means they thought his ideas were against their rules. However, he went before Pope Innocent VIII and was cleared of the charge.

Many people still remember the words Ficino used. He is the person who created the term "Platonic love." He first used this term in a letter in 1476. He wrote many letters to his friend, Giovanni Cavalcanti. These letters helped make the idea of Platonic love popular in Western Europe. Ficino died on October 1, 1499, in a place called Careggi. Today, a bust of him sits in the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore.
