People have found these ideas interesting for a very long time. They help us wonder about the universe and our place in it.

The tradition works by looking at the link between different things. One big idea is called "as above, so below." This means the huge universe and a single soul are connected.

Some followers use these ideas in alchemy. Alchemy is a way to study how matter changes. They look for a way to turn raw things into something perfect. This is sometimes called the "Great Work." It is a step-by-step way to find spiritual truth.

This way of thinking began in a place called Hellenistic Egypt. This was a time when many cultures mixed together.

The ideas come from a figure named Hermes Trismegistus. He is a mix of the Greek god Hermes and the Egyptian god Thoth. People believed he was a very wise person. He was thought to have received special knowledge from a divine source. This knowledge was passed down through many centuries of writing.

Many important books make up this tradition. These books are called the Hermetica. The most famous set is the Corpus Hermeticum.

Another famous text is the Emerald Tablet. It is a very short work that helped many alchemists. These texts are the foundation for everything else.

These ideas have traveled through history to reach us today. During the Renaissance, scholars found new ways to read them. Men like Marsilio Ficino and Lodovico Lazzarelli translated the books into Latin.
