Hermeticism is a complex philosophical and religious tradition. It is based on teachings attributed to a figure named Hermes Trismegistus. This figure is a syncretic person. This means he combines elements of two different gods. He blends the Greek god Hermes with the Egyptian god Thoth.

The tradition explores many different types of esoteric knowledge. Esoteric knowledge refers to ideas intended for a small group of people. This includes subjects like alchemy, astrology, and theurgy. Theurgy is a type of spiritual practice. Because it covers so many areas, the term Hermeticism can mean many things. It can refer to specific religious writings or broader philosophical systems.

The tradition functions through the study of connections. A central principle is the idea of "as above, so below." This concept suggests a correspondence between two different scales. It links the macrocosm, which is the entire universe, to the microcosm, which is the individual soul.

In the alchemical branch, this principle guides the transformation of matter. Alchemists look for the prima materia. This is the raw, formless substance from which all things originate. They often associate it with chaos. Through a process called the magnum opus, or "Great Work," they seek to purify this matter. This process often involves a stage called nigredo, which is a blackening stage. This work symbolizes the attempt to elevate material things to a perfected state.

There are two main types of Hermetic writings. These are known as the Hermetica. The first type is the philosophical or theological Hermetica. The most famous part of this is the Corpus Hermeticum. It is a collection of seventeen Greek treatises. These were written between approximately 100 and 300 CE. These texts often use the form of a dialogue. In a dialogue, Hermes Trismegistus instructs a disciple on hidden wisdom. The second type is the technical Hermetica. This category covers practical subjects like astrology and alchemy. These texts were used to understand and manipulate divine forces in the world.

History shows that Hermeticism began in Hellenistic Egypt. This was a cultural melting pot. Different religious and philosophical traditions mixed together there. The figure of Hermes Trismegistus emerged during this time. He was revered as a divine sage. Many scholars believe the Corpus Hermeticum was written by the beginning of the second century.

Other important texts include the Asclepius. This treatise discusses the divine spirit in all things. Another key text is the Emerald Tablet. This short work is central to the Western alchemical tradition. It helped define how people understood the relationship between the universe and the soul.

The significance of these ideas grew during the Renaissance. Scholars like Marsilio Ficino and Lodovico Lazzarelli translated the texts into Latin. This allowed more people to study them.

Renaissance thinkers like Giovanni Pico della Mirandola held specific beliefs about these texts. They developed the concept of prisca theologia. This means "ancient theology." They believed a single, true theology was given by God to the earliest humans. They thought traces of this truth existed in many different ancient systems. This eventually led to the idea of the perennial philosophy. This is the notion that divine truth can be found across many different traditions.

Many specific examples of Hermetic influence can be seen in history. In the fifth century, Joannes Stobaeus compiled an anthology of literature. This collection helped preserve many dialogues attributed to Hermes. Early Christian thinkers also interacted with these ideas. The Church Father Lactantius saw Hermes as a wise pagan prophet. He believed some teachings were compatible with Christianity. Some Gnostic traditions also shared Hermetic ideas. Both groups believed that esoteric knowledge was the key to salvation. They both taught that the soul's true home was in the divine realm.

Hermeticism connects to many broader fields of study. It has influenced the development of Western esotericism. It also played a role in the history of science through alchemy. The ideas regarding the nature of God are also significant. In this tradition, God is often called "the All" or "the One." God is seen as both transcendent and immanent. This means God is both far away as a creator and present within the created world. This view relates to the ideas held by the Stoics. Today, the term "Hermetic" is sometimes used to describe ancient Egyptian knowledge. It remains a subject of study for those interested in how different cultures share ideas.
