Many people call him the First Patriarch of the Pure Land School. This school focuses on a western paradise of the Buddha. His life helped shape how Buddhism grew in China.

Huiyuan taught many different things to his students. He taught about meditation and special wisdom. He also taught the vinaya, which are rules for monks. His journey began in the Shanxi province in the north. As a young boy, he studied many different ideas. He read the teachings of Confucius and the Laozi. He also studied the Zhuangzi. At age 21, a monk named Dao An changed his life. Dao An was a disciple of a missionary from Kuchan. After hearing these sermons, Huiyuan decided to leave his family life. He moved south to live in the Eastern Jin Dynasty.

In the year 402, Huiyuan organized a new group. This group was a Mahayana sect called Pure Land Buddhism. Later, in 404 AD, he wrote a very famous book. The title was On Why Monks Do Not Bow Down Before Kings. He wrote this to protect the independence of monks. He wanted the religious leaders to be free from kings. He spoke to the dictator Huan Xuan about this topic.

Huiyuan wanted people to know that Buddhists are good citizens. He wrote that followers of Buddha obey their lords. He also said they serve their parents with care. He used the idea of karma to explain this. Karma is the belief in how actions have results. He wanted to show that being a monk was not a threat. He built the Donglin Temple at the foot of Mount Lu. This temple became a special place for many people.
