He led a group called the White Lotus Society. This group followed Amitabha Buddha. Many people think he was the first leader of the Pure Land school.

Huiyuan taught many things. He taught about wisdom and meditation. He also taught about rules for monks. He wrote a book in the year 404. The book was called "On Why Monks Do Not Bow Down Before Kings."

In this book, he defended the rights of monks. He wanted them to be independent from kings. He said monks could still be good citizens. He said they would obey their lords. He also said they would serve their parents. This helped show that Buddhists were not a threat to the state.
