Landfill

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A landfill is a special site used to get rid of waste materials. This includes the municipal solid waste that comes from our homes and cities.

It is the oldest and most common way to handle trash. In the past, people simply left waste in piles. They also threw it into pits called middens. This changed in the 1940s when people began burying waste more systematically. Today, landfills are very important for managing the things we no longer need.

Running a modern landfill involves many careful steps to keep things organized. First, garbage trucks arrive at a scale or weighbridge to be weighed. Workers may inspect the loads to make sure the waste is allowed there. The trucks then drive to a working front called the tipping face.

Big machines like bulldozers or compactors spread the trash out. They squash the waste down to save as much space as possible. This process is called compaction. At the end of each day, workers cover the waste with soil or wood chips. This small area of waste and cover is called a daily cell.

Many landfills are actually engineered facilities called sanitary landfills. These became very common in the 1960s and 1970s. They were built to replace open dumps that were not clean.

A sanitary landfill acts like a biological reactor. It uses tiny living things called microbes to break down organic waste. These microbes turn complex waste into simpler, less toxic parts over time. This is a natural process that scientists study using environmental engineering. It helps the waste stabilize as it sits in the ground.

There are five different stages in the life of a landfill. In Phase I, microbes use oxygen to begin breaking things down. Phase II happens as the oxygen runs out. During Phase III, acids form and the liquid in the landfill becomes more acidic. Phase IV is the longest stage, where microbes create gases like methane and carbon dioxide.

Finally, Phase V is the maturation stage. This is when the activity of the microbes slows down. The landfill becomes more stable as it reaches the end of its cycle.

While landfills are helpful, they can also affect the world around them. One concern is leachate, which is a liquid that forms when water soaks through the waste. This liquid can carry pollutants like heavy metals. To prevent this, modern landfills use thick, impermeable liners to protect the ground.

Landfills also release gases like methane, which is a greenhouse gas. In fact, landfills are the third largest source of methane in the world. Once a landfill is completely full, the land can sometimes be reclaimed for new uses.
