While landfills are helpful, they can also affect the world around them. One concern is leachate, which is a liquid that forms when water soaks through the waste. This liquid can carry pollutants like heavy metals. To prevent this, modern landfills use thick, impermeable liners to protect the ground. Landfills also release gases like methane, which is a greenhouse gas. In fact, landfills are the third largest source of methane in the world. Once the waste is unloaded, heavy machines like compactors or bulldozers spread it out. These machines then compress the waste to reduce its total volume. This process is called compaction, and it is critical for extending the life of the landfill. To finish the day, workers cover the waste with soil, wood chips, or even sprayed-on foam. This daily layer creates what is known as a daily cell.

Sanitary landfills are designed to function as biological reactors. In these reactors, microbes work to break down complex organic waste into simpler, less toxic compounds. This process is managed through environmental engineering to ensure safety. The decomposition follows five distinct phases. In Phase I, or initial adjustment, microbes use molecular oxygen (O2) to begin breaking down waste. As the oxygen is used up, the landfill enters Phase II, the transition stage. Here, microbes begin using nitrates and sulphates as they adapt to lower oxygen levels.

As the process continues, the landfill enters Phase III, known as acid formation. During this stage, the breakdown of organic matter causes a rapid accumulation of volatile fatty acids (VFAs). This causes the liquid in the landfill, called leachate, to become more acidic. The pH level can drop from about 7.5 down to 5.6. This acidity can make certain metals more mobile in the environment. Following this is Phase IV, the methane fermentation stage. This is the longest phase of the cycle. Methanogenic microorganisms convert acids into methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2).

The final stage is Phase V, which is called final maturation and stabilization. During this time, the rate of microbial activity slows down significantly. This happens because the supply of nutrients, such as bioavailable phosphorus, becomes scarce. Methane production almost completely disappears during this phase. Eventually, the landfill stabilizes, and the organic matter may be converted into humic-like compounds. This long cycle ensures that the waste is being chemically transformed over many years.

Despite being engineered, landfills present significant environmental challenges. One major concern is the production of leachate. This is a liquid that forms when precipitation falls on the waste or when water is released during decomposition. Leachate can be enriched with organic matter, heavy metals, and high concentrations of ammonium nitrogen. To prevent this liquid from contaminating groundwater or aquifers, modern sites use impermeable liners several meters thick. These liners are designed to capture the leachate so it can be treated and evaporated. However, because liners have a lifespan of hundreds of years, the surrounding ground must be constantly tested for leaks.

Landfills also impact the atmosphere through the release of decomposition gases. The gas produced is typically a mix of about 50% methane and slightly less than 50% carbon dioxide.

Other components include about 5% molecular nitrogen and small amounts of hydrogen sulfide. Because methane is a potent greenhouse gas, landfills are a major factor in climate change. In fact, landfills are the third largest emitter of methane in the entire world. Managing these gases and protecting the surrounding soil and water remains a primary goal for engineers today.
