Most of it is municipal solid waste from homes and businesses. This type of waste is expected to reach 3.4 gigatonnes by the year 2050. Managing it well helps protect our health and the planet.

We can follow a plan called the waste hierarchy to manage trash. This plan is shaped like a pyramid to show the best steps. The very best step is to prevent waste from being made at all. Next, we should try to reuse things instead of throwing them away. After that, we can recycle materials like metal or paper.

Some places even use waste-to-energy plants to burn trash for heat.

People have handled waste differently throughout history. Long ago, most waste was just ashes or organic matter. People often reused tools made of wood or metal for many years. Some groups, like the Maya, had monthly rituals to burn rubbish. In the 1800s, the Ashanti Empire had a department for sanitation.

In the United Kingdom, waste laws began to change in the 1800s. A man named Edwin Chadwick wrote a famous report in 1842. His work helped lead to laws for cleaning up cities. In 1874, the first incinerator was built in Nottingham.

This includes old phones, computers, and even refrigerators. India produces about 2 million tonnes of e-waste every year. This makes them the fifth largest producer in the world. We can use the "7R" method to help manage this. This means we can refuse, reduce, reuse, repair, repurpose, recycle, or recover. These steps help us use our resources much more wisely.
