Land reclamation

technology Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Land reclamation is a way to create new ground where there was once water. People use this to make space for cities, parks, or even airports.

This process can happen in oceans, seas, or even riverbeds. The new ground is often called reclaimed land or land fill. It is important to know that land fill is not the same as a waste landfill.

People do this because they need more room to live and work.

There are several ways to make this new land. One simple method is called infilling. This works by filling a space with heavy rock or cement. Then, workers add clay and dirt until the ground reaches the right height.

Another way is land dredging. This means using machines to remove sand and mud from the bottom of the water. Sometimes, people drain wet areas called wetlands to make them good for farming. In some places, they use deep cement mixing to keep messy materials in one spot.

Humans have been making new land for thousands of years. In ancient Egypt, rulers of the Twelfth Dynasty worked on land around 2000 to 1800 BC. They built canals to move water and create new farms.

Later, in 1612, people in the Netherlands added land called the Beemster Polder. In 1890, Hong Kong finished a big project called the Praya Reclamation Scheme. This was a very ambitious task for the time.

Many famous places around the world use reclaimed land today. The Flevopolder in the Netherlands is the largest artificial island in the world.

In Singapore, the land grew by 25% between 1960 and 2019. This helped the city make more homes. In India, it took over 150 years to join seven islands to make Mumbai. In the United States, many parts of San Francisco and New Jersey sit on reclaimed ground.

You can see the results of this work in many places you might visit. Some airports, like those in Hong Kong or Tokyo, are built on this new land.

You might also walk through a huge city square like Xinghai Square in China.

Even some beautiful beaches, like East Coast Park in Singapore, were made by people.
