Long ago, karate grew from local styles called te. These styles mixed with martial arts from China. Some say it grew from an old dance called mēkata. In the 1600s, samurai rule made it hard to carry swords. This led people to make unarmed combat methods.

Early karate had no uniforms or colored belts. Later, masters like Gichin Funakoshi added these parts. He used ideas from judo to help make it a sport.

The name also changed over time. It once meant "Chinese hand." Later, the name was changed to "empty hand." This was done to make it feel more Japanese.

Today, karate is more than just fighting. Many schools teach karate-do, or "the way of the empty hand." This means it is about building character. It teaches respect and hard work. Millions of people practice it around the world.
