He was born in Okinawa in 1888. He began learning karate at age 11. Later, he trained with a teacher named Kanryo Higaonna. This training lasted for 15 years.

Miyagi traveled to China to learn more. He saw local ways of moving. He used these ideas to make a new style. In 1929, he named it Goju-ryu. This name means "hard soft style." It uses strong moves and gentle moves. He made special patterns of movement called kata. One is Sanchin, which is hard. Another is Tensho, which is soft.

Miyagi wanted his students to be strong. He also wanted them to have good character. For the first year, he gave them chores. They might move rocks or trees to get strong. This helped them prepare for real training.

Miyagi helped karate spread to many places. He brought it to schools and police work. His style was the first to be officially recognized. Today, many people still teach his ways.
