He created a special way of practicing karate called Goju-ryu. This name means "hard soft style." It is a very special way to move. People love it because it mixes different kinds of strength. It uses both strong moves and gentle moves together. This balance is what makes his style so unique and important.

To learn his style, students follow patterns called kata. Miyagi created several of these important patterns. He developed Sanchin to show the hard side of Goju-ryu. He also created Tensho to show the soft side. He even made shorter forms called Gekisai Dai Ichi and Gekisai Dai Ni in 1940. These shorter forms helped bridge the gap between different moves. One very long form is called Suparinpei. Some people say it contains almost everything in the style.

Miyagi began his own training when he was only 11 years old. He studied under a teacher named Ryuko Aragaki. Later, he met a teacher named Kanryo Higaonna. Miyagi trained with Higaonna for 15 years. This was a very long and hard time of learning. In 1915, Miyagi even traveled to China. He visited Fujian Province to see the grave of a teacher. He also studied local Chinese martial arts during his trips.

Miyagi was born in Higashimachi, Naha, on April 25, 1888. He lived a long life of teaching and learning. He brought karate to many new places in society. He introduced it to high schools and even police work. His style was the first to be officially recognized by the Dai Nippon Butokukai. Miyagi passed away in Okinawa on October 8, 1953. He had a heart attack that led to his death.

Many famous teachers today still follow his path. Some of his best students were Seko Higa and Eiichi Miyazato. Miyazato even built the Jundokan dojo to keep the teaching going. You might even see his name in movies. The character Mr. Miyagi in the film *The Karate Kid* was inspired by him. In the show *Cobra Kai*, the characters are even called his relatives. His hard work helped karate become a part of the whole world.
