Kabaddi is an exciting contact sport played by two teams. Each team has seven players on the court.

One player from the attacking team is called the raider. The raider runs into the other team's side to tag defenders. They must do this all on a single breath. To prove they are not inhaling, they must chant the word "kabaddi" repeatedly. This rhythmic chant is known as a cant.

The raider earns a point for every defender they touch. However, the defenders can earn a point by tackling the raider. If a raider is tackled, they are temporarily out of the game. They can return to the court when their team scores a point.

There are different ways to play this game. The standard style is played on a rectangular court indoors.

In this style, a raider has a 30-second time limit. They must cross a line called the baulk line to score. If they step over a bonus line, they get an extra point. Another version is Punjabi kabaddi, which is played outdoors on a circular field.

There is also beach kabaddi. This version is played on sand by teams of four players. They do not wear shoes when playing on the shore or river banks.

People have played versions of kabaddi for a very long time. Some believe it started during the Vedic period between 1500 BC and 500 BC.

Ancient stories say figures like Siddhartha Gautama played an early form of the sport. Some say the game grew from Jallikattu, which is like taming a bull. In this way, a player moving toward the opposition is like a bull. There are also accounts of people playing kabaddi in Iran 2,000 years ago. The name kabaddi comes from a Tamil word meaning "to hold hands."

Modern kabaddi became a competitive sport in the 20th century. The first rules were written in Maharashtra during the 1920s.

In 1938, it was added to the National Games of India. The All-India Kabaddi Federation was later formed in 1950. Kabaddi became part of the Asian Games in 1990. The Pro Kabaddi League started in 2014 to make the sport very popular. This league changed the rules, such as adding the 30-second raid limit. Now, many people watch these matches on television.

Kabaddi is very important in South Asia and nearby countries. It is the national sport of Bangladesh.
