Kabaddi is a high-energy contact team sport played between two opposing sides. Each team consists of seven players on the court.

The game is a traditional part of South Asian culture. It relies on strength, speed, and breath control. The sport is played in many different ways across the world. It has grown from a village game into a major professional sport. Today, it is watched by millions of people globally.

During a match, the game revolves around a single player called the raider. The raider enters the opposing team's half of the court to perform a raid. To succeed, the raider must tag as many defenders as possible. They must then return to their own half without being tackled.

A key rule is that the raider must complete the raid on a single breath. To prove they are not inhaling, they must perform a rhythmic chant called a cant. They repeatedly say the word "kabaddi" throughout the entire raid. If the defenders tackle the raider before they return, the defenders earn a point.

There are several distinct styles of kabaddi played today. The standard style is played on a rectangular indoor court.

In this version, raids have a strict 30-second time limit. Players can also earn a bonus point by stepping over a specific line. Punjabi kabaddi, or circle style, is played outdoors on a circular field.

Another version is beach kabaddi, played on sand by teams of four players. These players do not wear shoes while playing on shores or river banks.

There are also indoor variants played with five members per team.

History suggests that kabaddi has very ancient roots. Some researchers believe the sport originated during the Vedic period between 1500 BC and 500 BC. Ancient accounts mention figures like Siddhartha Gautama and Lord Krishna playing early versions. Some theories suggest the game developed from Jallikattu, which involves taming a bull. In this comparison, a raider moving toward the defense is like a bull. There are also records of kabaddi being played in Iran 2,000 years ago.

Modern kabaddi began to formalize in the 20th century. The first framework of rules was prepared in Maharashtra during the 1920s. This was modeled after English sports to create a structured competition. The All-India Kabaddi Federation was established in 1950 to help the sport grow. Kabaddi was later included in the Asian Games starting in 1990.

The Pro Kabaddi League, or PKL, launched in 2014. This league revolutionized the sport by introducing the 30-second raid limit.

There are also organizations like the World Kabaddi Federation. These groups host major events like the Kabaddi World Cup. The sport has even spread to Europe, with championships held in Scotland and Italy.

In the UAE, the Kabaddi Masters tournament brings teams together. Whether played on a professional court or a sandy beach, it remains a powerful test of skill.
