Two teams of seven players face each other. One player is called the raider. The raider runs into the other team's side. Their goal is to tag the defenders. They must do this while holding one breath. To show this, they chant "kabaddi" over and over. This chant is called a cant.

The raider has 30 seconds to finish the job. They must run back to their side without being tackled. If they tag a player, they earn a point. If the defenders tackle the raider, they earn a point. Tagged players must leave the game for a short time. They can return when their team scores.
