It began with farmers in the Punjab area. They danced to celebrate a successful harvest. This often happens during the Vaisakhi festival in spring.

Dancers use big jumps and strong kicks. They also move their arms and shoulders with power. Most dancers perform in a circle. They dance to the beat of a dhol. A dhol is a large drum with two heads. A person hits one side with a heavy tool. They hit the other side with a light stick. This makes a swinging rhythm. Singers also perform short songs called boliyan.

In the past, mostly men performed this dance. Today, many women dance Bhangra too. Some women join special contests. One is called Raaniyan Di Raunaq. This event is just for women and nonbinary people.

Bhangra is now famous all over the world. It has mixed with new music like hip hop. Some people even perform Bhangra on skates! No matter how it changes, it helps people feel proud of their roots.
