Winning brings great pride to the riders and their supporters.

There are different ways to play the game. In the Tudabarai style, the goal is quite simple. A player grabs the carcass and moves in any direction. They try to get clear of all the other players. In the Qarajai style, the game is much harder. Riders must carry the carcass around a specific marker. Then they must throw it into a scoring circle called the Circle of Justice.

This sport has a very long history. It began with nomadic Asian tribes a long time ago. These tribes moved from China and Mongolia between the 10th and 15th centuries. The game has remained a legacy of that old era. Many different groups play similar games today. For example, people in Kazakhstan play a game called kokpar.

In Kyrgyzstan, the rules for their game, kokboru, were officially set in 1949.

Playing buzkashi requires great skill and strength. A master player is called a chapandaz. Many believe a great chapandaz is usually in his forties. This is because the game requires years of hard practice. The horses also need very special training. These horses are often owned by very wealthy people. A winning horse brings a lot of pride to its owner.

Riders wear heavy clothes and head protection to stay safe. Some players even use old tank helmets for protection.

Buzkashi is part of many different cultures. In Tajikistan, games are very popular at weddings. The father of the bride often sponsors these games. Similar games are played by the Uzbeks, Kyrgyz, and many other groups. Even in the United States, a version was played in the 1940s. In Cleveland, Ohio, teams played a game called kav kaz. They used a sheepskin-covered ball on horseback.
