Each team has three players on the court at once. They play on an indoor court that is shaped like a volleyball court.

To make sure the game is fair, every player wears blackened-out eyeshades. These shades block out all light so everyone plays on equal footing. This includes players who are partially sighted or even fully sighted. The game relies on ear-hand coordination rather than sight. Because players must listen, the crowd must remain completely silent.

Players use a special ball to play the game. The ball has eight holes and contains several bells inside. These bells make noise so players can hear where the ball is moving. To score, an offensive player rolls or bounces the ball down the court. They try to throw it into the opponent's goal. The ball must hit the player's own landing zone and the neutral zone. This helps the player control the speed and direction of the throw. Some players even spin before they throw to add more power.

Defending is a very active and physical job. When players hear the ball coming, they must "lay out." This means they slide on their hips across the floor. They stretch their arms and legs out to stay as long as possible. They use their whole bodies to block the ball from entering the goal. Some players use their chests to absorb the impact of the ball. Others use their legs to guide the ball into their hands. This helps them stop the ball from scoring a point.

Goalball has a very interesting history. It was created in 1946 by Hans Lorenzen from Austria and Sepp Reindle from Germany. They originally designed it as a way to help veterans with vision loss. The sport grew into a competitive game during the 1950s and 1960s. It was a demonstration sport at the 1972 Summer Paralympics in West Germany. Later, it became an official Paralympic sport in Toronto in 1976. The first world championship was held in Austria in 1978.

Today, the sport is managed by the International Blind Sports Federation. This group was founded in 1981 to look after many different sports. Many different nations now compete in goalball around the world. By July 2025, there were 99 competitive nations for men and 61 for women. Matches consist of two twelve-minute halves. If the score is tied, teams play overtime for a "golden goal." This means the first team to score in overtime wins the game.
