He helped change how we understand sickness and how we stay healthy. Snow was a leader in the study of epidemiology. This is a way of studying how diseases spread through groups of people. He also helped develop anaesthesia, which is medicine that helps people not feel pain during surgery. His work helped make cities much cleaner and safer for everyone in the world.

Snow discovered how cholera spread by looking at patterns of sickness.

Many people thought a "bad air" called miasma caused the disease. Snow did not believe this idea. He talked to local people to find out where they got their water. He used a dot map to show where people were dying. The map showed a huge cluster of deaths near a water pump on Broad Street. Snow convinced leaders to remove the pump handle to stop people from using the water.

He was the first of nine children in his family. His father worked at a coal yard and later became a farmer. As a boy, Snow saw many dirty streets and rivers in his hometown. This experience might have helped him care about cleanliness. He started learning medicine as an apprentice when he was only 14 years old. He later studied at the Hunterian school of medicine in London.

Snow did a lot of work with different medicines to stop pain.

He studied ether and chloroform to see how they worked. He even designed a special mask to help give chloroform to patients safely. Snow was very careful about how much medicine a person received. He treated 77 patients during childbirth using chloroform. In 1853, Queen Victoria even asked him to use chloroform when she had her eighth child. This helped more people accept these medicines for medical use.

We can see Snow's impact in how our cities work today. His work showed that clean water is necessary to stay healthy. Because of his findings, cities changed how they handled waste and water. He proved that germs in water, not just bad air, could make people sick. This helped start the modern way we protect public health. His ideas changed the way doctors treat patients and how we build our world.
