He was known for playing characters who seemed tough but were actually sensitive. His career began on the stage in 1968. He played a servant named Peter in Romeo and Juliet. Later, he found himself being auditioned by chance at a theater bar. He was successful and quickly became a professional actor. He worked in many plays, including roles at the Royal Shakespeare Company. These early years helped him build his great skill.

Acting involves much more than just speaking lines. To play the detective Eddie Valiant in Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Hoskins had to learn mime. Mime is a way of acting using body movements. This helped him interact with the animated characters on screen. He also used his voice to act in animated films. He voiced a character named Boris Goosinov in the movie Balto. He even appeared in many television commercials for brands like Weetabix. This variety showed how many different ways an actor can work.

Hoskins had a very busy life before he became a star. He was born in Bury St Edmunds in 1942. As a boy, he lived in the Finsbury Park area of London. He attended Stroud Green Secondary School. Because of dyslexia, he had a hard time with schoolwork. He left school at age 15 with only one O-Level. Before acting, he worked many jobs. He was a porter, a plumber, and a window cleaner. He even spent time tending to camels in Syria.

His film career brought him many big awards.
