He was widely recognized for his ability to portray "tough guy" characters who possessed deep sensitivity. His career spanned decades and included work in theater, television, film, and voice acting. Through these various mediums, Hoskins demonstrated a remarkable range of talent. He became a respected figure in the global film community. His work often explored the complexities of human nature.

Before his acting success, Hoskins lived a life defined by diverse manual labor. He was born in Bury St Edmunds on 26 October 1942. Growing up in London's Finsbury Park area, he attended Stroud Green Secondary School. Due to dyslexia, a learning difficulty that affects reading and writing, he struggled in school. He left at age 15 with only one O-Level qualification. He worked as a porter, a plumber, a window cleaner, and a lorry driver. He also spent time on a kibbutz in Israel and tended camels in Syria.

Hoskins's professional acting career began on the stage in 1968. His first role was playing a servant named Peter in *Romeo and Juliet* at the Victoria Theatre. A pivotal moment occurred in 1969 at the Unity Theatre in London. While waiting in a bar, he was handed a script and asked to audition. He was successful, and his friend Roger Frost described him as a "natural" performer. He later performed with the Royal Shakespeare Company and in West End productions. These stage experiences provided the foundation for his later screen success.

His transition to television and film brought him widespread fame. A major breakthrough occurred in the 1978 BBC serial *Pennies from Heaven*, where he played Arthur Parker. In the 1980s, his film roles gained critical acclaim. He starred in *The Long Good Friday* (1980) and *Mona Lisa* (1986). For his performance in *Mona Lisa*, he received several prestigious honors. These included a BAFTA, a Golden Globe, and a Cannes Film Festival Award. He was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor.

One of his most famous roles was playing detective Edward "Eddie" Valiant in *Who Framed Roger Rabbit* (1988). This role required specialized preparation because the character interacts with animated figures. Hoskins had to take mime training courses to master physical contact with the drawings. He was highly praised by critics like Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert for this part. He also demonstrated versatility by using American accents in many roles. He played characters like J. Edgar Hoover in *Nixon* (1995) and Mario in *Super Mario Bros.* (1993).

Beyond acting, Hoskins also worked as a director and producer.

These different roles showed his ability to adapt to any creative requirement.

In his later years, Hoskins faced significant health challenges. In 2011, he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, a neurological condition. This diagnosis led to his retirement from acting in August 2012. He passed away on 29 April 2014 from pneumonia at a London hospital. He was 71 years old at the time of his death.
