He spent his life studying the world of fish. This special science is called ichthyology. People often call him the "father of ichthyology." This is because he found new ways to group fish. He helped people understand how different fish are related. His work changed how we look at the water.

Artedi worked by looking closely at many different fish. He wanted to put them into organized groups. This way of grouping is called classification. He studied fish to see what made them unique. He also worked with his close friend, Carl Linnaeus. The two friends made a very special promise. They gave each other their books and papers. They agreed to finish each other's work if one died.

Artedi was born in a place called Anundsjö. His family had a long history of service. His grandfather, Petrus Martini, was a minister. His father, Olaus Petri, was also a minister. Artedi went to study at Uppsala University in 1724. At first, he wanted to study theology. Later, he changed his focus to medicine and natural history. He became very interested in the study of fish.

Artedi wrote descriptions of fish for a book called the Thesaurus. Sadly, Artedi died in 1735 after a fall into a canal. He was only about 30 years old. Linnaeus finished Artedi's books and published them in 1738.
