He lived a long time ago. He was born in Omsk in 1855. He spent most of his life as a teacher. He also worked as a school leader. Annensky was a scholar of old languages. He spent many years translating Greek plays. He translated all the works of Euripides. This was a famous writer from ancient Greece.

Annensky did not write for money. He was a professor and a translator instead. He was shy about his own poems. He used a fake name to publish them. This was to protect his job at the school. His first book was called Quiet Songs. His most famous book is The Cypress Chest.

Many famous writers later loved his work. They found great meaning in his poems. Some people call him a Symbolist. This is a type of art that uses symbols. His poems often thought about life and death. He saw life as a strange dream. Even a small rock in space has his name. It is an asteroid named after him.
