Even though he was famous later, he was not well known while he lived. He was a leader in a style called Russian Symbolism. This type of art uses symbols to share deep feelings. Annensky was also a scholar and a translator. He did not write his own poems to make money. Instead, he worked as a professor and a school leader. He spent his life studying old languages and writing essays. Many people consider him one of the most significant poets of his time.

Annensky had a very busy way of working. He spent many years translating works from Ancient Greek. From 1890 until 1909, he translated every play by Euripides. He also wrote his own tragedies based on ancient Greece. Some of these plays include Melanippe the Wise and King Ixion. He even wrote a play called Laodamia in 1906. Besides poetry, he wrote books of reflections about other writers. These essays were so artistic that people called them critical prose. He also helped edit a journal called Apollon near the end of his life.

His life began in Omsk in 1855.

His family was involved in public work. He lost his parents when he was young. His older brother, Nikolai, helped raise him. In 1860, he moved to the city of Saint Petersburg. He studied at St. Petersburg University to learn about languages. Later, he became a teacher at a school in Tsarskoe Selo. He served as the director of that school for many years. He stayed in that role until he died in 1909.

Annensky was quite careful about sharing his own poems. His brother told him not to publish them until he was 35. In 1904, he finally published a book called Quiet Songs. He used a fake name, Nik. T.-o, to write it. This name meant "No one" in Russian. He used a fake name because he was a school director. He did not want his new poems to cause trouble at his job. His most famous book of poetry is called The Cypress Chest. It was published in 1910, one year after he passed away.

Many famous poets were inspired by his beautiful words. Writers like Mandelstam and Akhmatova loved his work. They helped him gain recognition in the West. His poems often explored deep ideas about life and death. He saw life as a strange, unhappy dream. This feeling is a big part of Symbolist poetry. Even space honors his memory today. A Soviet astronomer found an asteroid in 1979 and named it Annenskij.
