Joachim du Bellay was a famous French poet and critic. He helped start a group of writers called La Pléiade. This group wanted to make the French language a great tool for art. At that time, many people thought French was too simple. They believed only Greek and Latin were good for serious poetry. Du Bellay disagreed with this idea. He wanted to show that French could be just as beautiful and powerful.

To change how people wrote, du Bellay had a specific plan. He wrote a famous book called *Défense et illustration de la langue française*. This book was a manifesto, which is a public statement of ideas. He argued that French could be enriched by borrowing words from Italian, Latin, and Greek. He also believed writers should use a special style for poetry. This style would be different from the way people wrote regular prose. He wanted poets to imitate the forms used by ancient writers.

Du Bellay’s life began at the Castle of La Turmelière near Angers. He was the son of Jean du Bellay and Renée Chabot. Sadly, both of his parents died while he was still a young child. His older brother, René, looked after him but did not focus on his schooling. Later, du Bellay went to the University of Poitiers to study law. It was there that he met his close friend, the poet Pierre de Ronsard. This meeting is seen as a huge starting point for French Renaissance poetry.

Du Bellay wrote many different kinds of poems throughout his life. One famous collection is called *Olive*, which used a style called the sonnet. A sonnet is a short poem with a set pattern. He also wrote a group of poems called *Antiquités de Rome* while living in Italy. These poems were more personal than his earlier work. Later, he wrote the *Regrets*, which expressed his sadness and his love for his home. These poems often talked about his time in Rome and his feelings for a lady named Faustine.

Life was often difficult for the poet. He suffered from a long illness that caused him to lose his hearing. He also faced many worries regarding his family and his work for Cardinal du Bellay. Du Bellay died on January 1, 1560, at the age of 38. He was buried in the Notre Dame of Paris cathedral. Even though he lived a short life, his work changed French literature forever. His ideas helped turn the French language into a language for great art.
