Joachim du Bellay was a famous French poet. He was a leader of a group called La Pléiade. This group of writers wanted to make French art great. At that time, many people thought French was not a good language for poetry. They preferred using Greek or Latin. Joachim disagreed with them. He wrote a famous book to defend the French language. He believed French could be just as beautiful as the old languages.

Joachim wrote many poems called sonnets. These are short poems with a set pattern. He wrote a collection called Olive. Later, he wrote poems called the Regrets. These poems were very personal. He wrote about feeling lonely while living in Rome. He also wrote about a lady he loved. He wrote about missing the river banks in his home country.

Life was not always easy for him. He was often sick. A long illness made him lose his hearing. He died when he was only thirty-eight years old. Even so, his words changed how people wrote in French. He helped make the language a tool for great art.
