Gekkonidae is the largest family of geckos in the world.

It contains over 950 different species. These animals live in 62 different genera. You might know some of them already. For example, house geckos belong to the genus Hemidactylus. There are also tokay geckos and day geckos. Many of these geckos live in warm, tropical areas. They are found all over the globe.

Many geckos have a special way to climb. They can stick to many different surfaces. This happens because of tiny hairs on their feet. Scientists call these hairs setae. These hairs use something called Van der Waals forces. This is a force between molecules. The molecules in the setae pull on the molecules of the surface. This helps the gecko stay attached while it moves.

Geckos have a very long history on Earth.

Their group first appeared during the Jurassic period. This was between 200 and 145 million years ago. One early relative was called Eichstaettisaurus schroederi. This animal had features that helped it climb. Other fossils like Hoburogekko suchanovi lived later. They lived during the Cretaceous period. This was about 121 to 100 million years ago.

We have found very old geckos in fossils.

The earliest known gekkonid is Yantarogekko balticus. It was found in Baltic amber. This amber is from the Eocene epoch. That was between 56 and 33.9 million years ago. This gecko was quite small. It was only 20 to 22 mm long. It had special pads on its feet. It may have stuck to things just like modern geckos.

Geckos live in many different places today.

Some groups live in only one place. These are called endemic groups. For example, Afroedura and Afrogecko live only in Africa. Other geckos travel much further. The genus Hemidactylus lives in all subtropical areas. The genus Lepidodactylus lives from South Asia to Oceania. This group includes many species that live on islands. They are very good at finding new homes.
