Geckos are small, mostly meat-eating lizards found in warm places. They live on every continent except for Antarctica. There are about 1,500 different species of geckos in the world.

Some geckos even live inside human homes. The house gecko is a common example of this. These lizards are often welcomed by people. They help by eating pests like mosquitoes and moths.

Many geckos are nocturnal, which means they are active at night. They have amazing vision in the dark. Their eyes can see color 350 times better than human eyes. Most geckos do not have eyelids to blink. Instead, they have a clear skin layer called a brille. They must lick their brilles to keep them moist and clean.

Geckos have a very special way of climbing. About 60% of species have sticky toe pads. These pads use tiny hairs called setae to grab surfaces. Each hair has even smaller tips called spatulae. These tiny parts allow them to walk on smooth ceilings. They can even peel their toes off like removing Scotch Tape.

We can learn about gecko history from old fossils. Some early relatives lived during the late Jurassic period. One famous relative was called Eichstaettisaurus in Germany. The oldest fossils of modern geckos are 100 million years old. These were found in Burmese amber in Myanmar. These fossils show that geckos had sticky feet a long time ago.

Geckos have many different sizes and shapes. The Jaragua sphaero is a very tiny species. It was found in 2001 near Hispaniola. The largest species is called Gigarcanum delcourti. It was likely found in New Caledonia. This large gecko is only known from one specimen. It is kept in a museum in Marseille, France.
