Geckos are small lizards found in warm places. They live on every continent except Antarctica. There are about 1,500 different species of geckos.

Most geckos are nocturnal. This means they are active at night. They have great night vision. Their eyes can see color in low light much better than human eyes. Most geckos do not have eyelids. Instead, they have a clear skin layer called a brille. They lick their brille to keep it clean and moist.

Many geckos have special toe pads. These pads help them climb smooth walls or ceilings. The pads have tiny hairs called setae. Each hair has even smaller tips called spatulae. These tiny parts help the gecko stick to surfaces. They can even peel their toes off like removing tape.

Geckos also make sounds. Some chirp or click to talk to each other. The Tokay gecko makes very loud calls. To stay safe, a gecko can drop its tail. A predator might chase the moving tail while the gecko runs away.
