It has over 950 species. These geckos live in warm places all over the world. Some live in tropical areas. Others live only in Africa. Some live on many islands.

Many geckos can stick to walls. This happens because of tiny hairs on their feet. We call these hairs setae. These hairs use a force called Van der Waals forces. This force works between the hairs and the surface. It helps them climb well.

Geckos have been around for a long time. Some gecko types lived in the Jurassic period. This was millions of years ago. One old kind was called Eichstaettisaurus. It had parts that helped it climb.

We found a very old gecko in amber. Amber is hard tree sap. This gecko was Yantarogekko balticus. It was very small. It was only 20 to 22 mm long. It had pads on its feet. It may have been able to stick to things just like geckos today.
